Commie

Last night, JenA came to town. She picked me up at work and whisked me away to meet C-money. Apparently, he wasn't expecting me, but we hung out, had a bite to eat and took a little stroll down memory lane. JenA lives in Chapel Hill and I left six years ago. Many things have changed since I left, but the life of a small town has a remarkable sameness to it. After I moved, JenA and C-money became better friends and there is a time they shared that I know very little about. It's a strange feeling.

Unfortunately for them, I almost passed out asleep at 10:30 pm and I oh-so-subtly prodded our party to leave the restaurant. My conversational skills and my ability to sit upright were almost non-existent. How embarrassing!

When I spoke to Tim on Wednesday night, he confirmed that he would be coming to Jen's movie. When I told him it was at 6:00 pm he said, "I guess I'll have to come straight from work."

"That's right. Oh. You'll be wearing your uniform." I laughed.

He laughed too and made a joke about sticking out as a Republican with all my Democratic friends, including me. I said, "I'm not a Democrat."

"What? You're not? What are you?"

I didn't realize we hadn't covered this ground before. "I'm a socialist."

"A socialist? You mean, like a communist? Are you a communist?"

"No, I'm not a communist. I'm a Democratic Socialist. There even used to be a whole branch of the Democratic party for it…"

"You're a commie? Really? You know that didn't work out so well…"

"No! I'm not a commie! I believe in Holland…"

"Holland? What are you talking about?"

"I believe in a strong social welfare state, like in Holland. With universal health care, child care, like that."

"And you are willing to date a Republican?"

"Apparently I am. I'm one of the few."

"You might be the only one!"

"I don't discriminate."

Last night (Thursday night), after I said goodnight to JenA, I sent Tim a text message. Then I went to sleep. He called me a little before midnight. "Are you asleep?"

I said, "I don't know. I think so." I talked to him anyway. "You know what happened between the time you read my message and when you called me?"

He said, "You got another boyfriend and you took him home and had sex with him?"

"What? No! How can you say that?"

"I'm just kidding."

"Hey, wait--are you my boyfriend?"

"What?"

"You said I got another boyfriend, so are you my boyfriend?"

"Am I?"

"Are you?"

"Am I?"

"Are you?"

He said, "Can we change the subject?"

"You're the one who said he wanted to 'pursue a relationship'."

"I did? When did I say that?"

"Oh, you said it. Don't deny it now!" I have it in writing, folks.

"We can't be BF/GF yet. We have to wait for six dates. What are we up to now?"

"If you count the first one, we're at four. Friday will be five. Why six dates?"

"I read an article…it said you should wait at least six dates so you could tell if you liked the person enough…"

"I read a book and it said you should wait eight dates."

"Eight? I think six is enough."

"Okay."

There was more silly talk and he told me he has to work this weekend. That means Pele and I will be on our own for our Saturday-Sunday camping trip, which is just fine. However, date #6 is planned for Sunday night. Date #5 is tonight.

This is so much fun.

Grateful for: having fun.
